Interview with Jennifer Mistmorgan: Grief, Imperfect Faith, and Wartime Romance

Interview with Jennifer Mistmorgan: Grief, Imperfect Faith, and Wartime Romance

In this episode we chat with Jennifer Mistmorgan, an Australian author of swoony World War II historical romances, whose writing is deeply rooted in faith, resilience, and emotional authenticity. Jennifer shares her powerful testimony—how a candy cane and a spirited scripture teacher sparked a family-wide transformation, and how those early seeds of faith eventually blossomed into her beautifully layered novels.

We dive into her latest book, These Long Shadows, a marriage-of-convenience romance set against the backdrop of post-war London. With poignant themes of grief, healing, and imperfect faith, Jennifer explores how God’s love anchors even the most broken hearts. This is an inspiring chat about surrendering to God’s plan, crafting emotionally rich stories, and writing characters that reflect the raw and redemptive beauty of real life.

Bible Verse for Encouragement

1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 (NKJV) But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope.
For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.

Jennifer’s New Book: These Long Shadows (On Victory’s Wings Series)

How do they rebuild a marriage that wasn’t real in the first place? If you love epic wartime romance with a dash of intrigue, you’ll love this second-chance, marriage-of-convenience love story.

London, 1945: Two years ago, Jonty Ables married Katie Baines to save her and her unborn baby from shame. But now the war is all but over, the baby is gone and they must work out where their shaky marriage fits into lives irrevocably changed by war.

Clinging to the memory of a time before all happiness evaporated, Katie works hard during the day as a seamstress. At night she comes home to a tiny terrace on a bomb-scarred street, crammed with her extended family and their problems. Years of estrangement sit between her and her recently demobilised husband. She’s not even sure she loves him. So why is she so crushed that he calls out another woman’s name in his sleep?

Jonty is determined to honor the vows he made no matter how many ghosts plague him. But with such separate lives, his wife is more of a stranger than ever. When Katie’s friend goes missing, Jonty seizes the opportunity to help her find him just so they have reason to talk. But the war casts long shadows over their efforts, and fighting for their future might just be the hardest battle of them all.

Book 3 of the On Victory’s Wings series, These Long Shadows, is easily read as a standalone novel.

Meet Patti Stockdale

Patti Stockdale loves hope, history, and a good happily ever after. She can’t remember numbers, so she married a statistician. Thanks to him, she’s lived all sorts of places and worked all sorts of jobs. While employed by the NFL, she once answered the phone with the wrong team’s name. She doesn’t work there anymore. For 11 years, she directed the programming at a nonprofit senior center and hosted an annual talent show, rocking a Dolly Parton wig, Annie Oakley boots, and a sweet—although snug—Batman costume. She no longer works there either. These days, Patti writes books and occasionally educational assessments and magazine articles.

Bible Verse for Encouragement

“Just as I am, without one plea, but that Thy blood was shed for me…” (inspired by the hymn Just As I Am)
Although not a direct Bible verse, the scriptural heart behind it resonates with Romans 5:8 (NKJV):
“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Patti’s New Book: His Unforgettable Bride (Bride Ships: New Voyages, Book 4)

A pickpocket turned lady and a prince with a forgotten past find love in the most unexpected place…

Juliet Dash, orphan and former pickpocket, yearns to leave her troubled past behind. So when she arrives in British Columbia and takes a respectable job working for a pair of society sisters who offer to give her etiquette lessons, she’s one step closer to that dream. But when an unexpected encounter with an unconscious man turns her world upside down, Juliet must choose between her heart and her aspirations.

Weary of the pressure of royal life, Prince Henry Graighton longs for solace and anonymity. But when tragedy strikes and his brother winds up dead, Henry finds himself thrust into the role of heir apparent, leaving him to struggle with the weight of his grief and unwanted responsibility. And when Henry is kidnapped, he narrowly escapes with his life…but loses his memories in the process. In his darkest hour, a beacon of hope emerges in the form of Juliet, his savior and the key to unlocking his forgotten past.

With danger lurking at every turn and the weight of Henry’s royal duties looming over them, can their budding romance withstand the trials that lie ahead, or will Juliet be forced to sacrifice her own happiness for the sake of Henry’s kingdom?
